Thanks Mom, bathtime is done...

The other day Z decided he'd had enough of his bathtime.
So he stood up, grabbed my shirt, swung his leg over the side of the tub, used me as leverage, and scrambled out.
Then my dripping nudster proceeded to toddle right out of the bathroom, dripping soapy water as we went. He paused at the door, turned to look at me, clapped and did a little dance, and went on his way.

I grabbed a towel and gave in to the end of bathtime. Seriously, folks, where, in that little (almost 11 month) brain of his, did "I should get out of the bathtub by myself" appear? I just shake my head at the things he decides he should do.

A boring post about food

Z is really into chunkier, peoplish foods now. It's a weird stage to be in because, at almost 11 months, he doesn't really have enough teeth to properly chew a lot of people food but he really isn't into pureed stuff either.

So far, we've had some good hits, some big misses and some "I'll eat it if I feel like it".

Hits:
  • berries (whole raspberries & blueberries)
  • avacado (he gets it spoon fed with some chicken cut up into it...and he likes it)
  • toast fingers with butter- although he's really into any carb I give him (crackers, bagels, breads, etc...)
  • whole baby carrots that are steamed just enough for him to gum (although he'll eat them mashed too)
  • roasted chicken
  • sweet potato fries (homemade- not cause I'm fancy, just because I happen to make them at home)
  • grilled cheese
  • yogurt (loves love loves)
  • piece of HARD fruit (which scares me to no end because he doesn't have molars- but he loves apple, pear and peaches that are HARD...no soft squishy fruit)
Misses:
  • casseroles. almost every one I have made has ended up being rejected (I'm attempting sheppard's pie with him tonight, so we'll see!). Even when I blend it up so it's easier to eat, he still isn't impressed
  • pasta with tomato sauce. He actually looks at me like I'm trying to torture him.
  • tofu. ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.
  • chicken fingers- thought he'd think these were awesome but he practically sobbed when I gave it to him
  • homemade potato leek soup. He ate the first two spoonfuls then stuck his hand straight out and fully rejected all further attmepts
  • FISH!
Sometimes Good- Sometimes Bad:
  • pureed fruit- sometimes he loves the stuff and sometimes he purses his lips and rejects
  • eggs- again, one day it's fantastic and the next it's AWFUL!
  • stew- first time it was a huge hit. Second time ok. Third time he cried. Oh well.
  • oatmeal- he hates the baby stuff unless I trick him into eating it. He thinks the grownup oats are ok but only if I'm eating it and he can eat some off of my big girl spoon.
  • most green veggies- he can't stand green veggies unless they are fully hidden by other more tasty treats. I gave him steamed broccoli once and that was an epic fail.
So there you have it! I've been looking at a few site for ideas on toddler foods. I'm going to make a batch of pancakes and freeze them so I have those as a breakfast option. Otherwise, I just keep trying. One thing I am learning is that he seems to take a while to warm up to new tastes/textures and I just have to be consistent with my attempts to introduce new foods. We're going to try melons as soon as they're a bit more in season.

But I'm open to ideas and suggestions- what do you serve your child? I'm running out of interesting ideas!

Have you missed me?? I bet you did...

I've been gone for a while haven't I?
Well, with good reason. Hubby turned 30. We had our first night away from our little man. Nearly killed me leading up to the night away- in fact, I could barely sleep thinking about it. I just couldn't concentrate on anything else, so blogging really was thrown by the wayside.

In the meantime, Z is fantastic.
New things you should know about:
  • he walks (well, he's trying really hard- our record is 6 steps before the fall- but he keeps getting up and stepping- you can't hold this kid down).
  • He kicks a ball. Actually kicks it- he's pretty good with his aim. At first he would just swing his right leg wildly and hope he hit something, but he's a lot better at actually timing it so he hits the ball. However, he has a hard time standing up straight and kicking at the same time- so if someone is behind him holding him up, it always goes better.
  • He's 10 1/2 months old and still doesn't say MAMA. Probably because I keep telling him to say it...he's stubborn like that- he looks at me like, woman, you're crazy.
  • He LOVES to be the centre of attention. At hubby's birthday celebration last night, Z was the star of the show. Although I had tried to put him to bed before the guests arrived, he was totally not having any of that and I gave in (like the sucker I am) and brought him downstairs to hang out with the guests. He practiced walking with his uncles, played with Aunty Lizzy's necklaces, said DADADADADADADADA, gave big smiles, claps, and had fun getting attention from every single person. He also said "Thea", which is his aunty's name...but then wouldn't say it again. He always makes me look like a liar I tell ya.
  • Speaking of clapping- he's clapping.
  • He loves raspberries (the actual berries). Just pops those bad boys in his mouth like they're going out of style. I go through a package of raspberries every 2-3 days.
  • He does not like his diaper changed. And he's strong. I can spend at least 15 mins trying to change a diaper- he flips and kicks and fusses and whines and attempts to run from me. I've had to cut my nails and stop wearing my rings because they often scratch him.
So there you go- a big update. I didn't talk about his sleeping habits, did I? Well, something for you to wait for. I'm pretty afraid to write it though, because I know he'll do the exact opposite as soon as I put it in print. I can safely say, though, that he's got his two front teeth about ready to pop through...any day now....then he'll have 4 teeth (all the better to eat raspberries with).

Swingin and sliding and being outdoors.

The weather has been beautiful and spring like around here for the past 5 days.

Z, his dad and I have spent at least 3 out of the past 5 days at the park. Z LOVES the swing, and thinks the slide is just ok. What he loves most, though is watching the other kids playing. He's fascinated by the bike riding kids the most. I can almost see him licking his lips in anticipation of the day that he gets to ride a bike and have me running after him screaming: GETBACKHERESLOWDOWNNOW!!!!!

I hope that Z grows up to be an active, outdoor kid. I used to babysit kids that never wanted to go outside and play- they just wanted board games and tv. I so hope he doesn't grow up like that! I want him to bug me every day to go to the park and play outside. I want him to set up his T-ball set in the backyard and smash balls off the house (not windows...house). I want him to splash around in his kiddie pool and run through the sprinkler. That's the kind of kid I hope he grows up to be.

For fun, here's some pics taken on Sunday:
Swinging with his dad. He pushes him too high. I get upset. Z laughs and claps for more. Hm.

Z and me. He looks bored. He was having fun- I SWEAR! He must be distracted by a kid on a bike or something...

See- hurray! The swing!

Oh, hello there..

YEAH! Hello second tooth- now my baby can sleep.

Right? RIGHT???????

FYI- apparently two bottom teeth=eating pear slices. Who knew all he needed to chop up pear was that second tooth?

Highchair Screamer, Milk Gulper, DON'T FEED ME MOMMY!!!!

Ok, been a while.
Apologies.

So, Z has taken to throwing fits when he can't communicate to me what it is that he wants. All out tantrums at times. High pitched screaming, red face, tears, the whole nine yards. It's frustrating for me and for him, because I realize that he is trying to communicate something to me, but I don't know what it is. More often then not, this happens in his highchair. I assume it is because he is higher in his chair and can see the things on the table, counters, etc...'
Needless to say, I dread our mealtimes because he gets so upset and refuses to eat about half way through. I usually end up coxing him to finish with some yogurt. Hope I'm not starting a trend, but yogurt is good for you, right?

Speaking of eating, someone does NOT like pasta with tofu and carrots and tomato sauce. Someone being Big Z. Two nights ago I made a very bland pasta dish (no spices because I have learned the hard way that he doesn't dig spices). Tofu, carrots, rotini pasta, sauce. I put some on his tray. He screamed so loudly it scared me. I gave him a piece of pasta. He put it on his lips (didn't want to commit) and started all out crying. No mommy. Stop feeding me this crap-tastic food. I ran and got a jar of baby food to appease him.
The next day, I had plenty of leftovers, so I forced his Uncle Adam to eat the bland pasta (he put a lot of salt on it, I felt bad for him...lol). Tried it again with Z thinking, maybe if he sees his Uncle eating it, he'll eat it too. Nope. Nada. Pasta with sauce is out. So is his bottle with formula. He's barely had any of it for the past couple days. But he seems fine with not drinking it so I'm trying not to be a huge stress ball about it. He lets me know when he wants something:)

What he does like is homogenized milk. ADORES it. Except he wants to gulp it, not sip it. Therefore, I have to take the lid off of the sippy cup and hold it as he drinks. He's like that with his water too. He wants to drink it the way we do and gets really upset if given the sippy cup with the sippy part on it. The milk covered his chin and bib, but he didn't care. He stared at me like, "put that cup up to my lips woman! Now!!!" Good thing he's cute because he is so stubborn. Can't you just see us locking horns as he starts to get older??

He has his second tooth...almost. you can actually see the tooth right under the skin, but it hasn't fully come out yet. It's driving him bananas- lots of night wakeups and pain (I assume). I wish it would just pop through already. He's been so clingy and whiny- just not himself. Hopefully that tooth is the root!

I'm making beef stew in the Crockpot tonight. I love stew. Will probably make biscuits to go with it. However, Z was hanging off my leg like an orangutan (I had to spell check and Goggle this one to find the right spelling!) when I was putting it together. Stewing beef, carrots, sweet potato, celery, can of tomatoes, have a thing of beef stock. Salt. Lid. Go.
Well, as Z was hanging off my leg, licking it (hope he didn't cut his tongue on my razor sharp hairy legs), I grabbed what I thought was beef stock, opened it, dumped it in. Then I thought, "Why does this smell like chicken?". Chicken stock. GRRRRR. Too late to pour it out, so I added some beef stalk too- this will be an interesting supper I am sure. Will be giving some to Z tonight, so we'll see how that goes. Any guesses?
