The Mom Who Sits on the Bench
See that bench? It's where I sit.
Every Sunday my kids and husband go skating and I sit on this bench and watch them. I sit here when my kids take skating lessons as well. And when they're playing baseball and soccer and karate. I sit on the bench when they're at the park and bouncing on the trampoline.
I'm a ever-present bench sitter.
I've spent my life wishing I could participate in athletics. Believe me when I say I have tried and I have tried hard. I tried soccer and gymnastics and basketball and volleyball. I tried tennis and golf and skating and cross-country. I joined a curling team and failed miserably. I joined cheerleading and didn't make it out of two practices.
It's not that I have a physical need that does not allow me to participate. It is that I physically cannot keep up. And because of that playing any sport feels like torture to me - it is never, ever fun and it is never, ever easy for me to do anything that requires even the most basic athletic skill.
If I told you that I've been a runner since I was 19, and then you saw me run, you would laugh. You would think I was joking because I channel a 2 year old who has just learned to walk/run while I'm moving. I always look like I'm about to topple over (and I have, more times than I care to admit). I'm a mess, and yet I have been trying to be a "runner" for years. I've never gotten better, no matter how much I run. In fact, I had a running coach for an entire year and my time and form did not ever improve (that running coach, who I paid for by the way, said he had never had a client who tried less than I did. I can't tell you how demoralizing that was for me).
If I told you that games like foosball are hard for me because they require hand-eye coordination you would probably not believe me but it's true. I was once on a date at a bar when my date insisted we play foosball. I felt physically sick because I had tried before and knew I was going to be a mess, but I liked him and didn't want to make a fuss. He destroyed me in the game (I don't think I scored once) and then proceeded to go on and on about how he can't stand girls who are too prissy to try. Needless to say we never went out again.
What bothers me is that people, much like my running coach, automatically assume that I'm not trying when I am a disaster at anything that requires athletic skill or coordination. People say "get up and try", "of course you can't play you never try hard", and (my personal favourite) "why don't you put your best effort in?". But what they don't know is that I do. I try so, so, so hard when it comes to sports and athletics and have tried for so many years.
Those are just two examples - I could write a novel on the number of times I tried my best at something even remotely athletic and was told it wasn't good enough.
So why do I tell you all this? Maybe deep down I want some sympathy or something, but I also want to give a bit of a reality check.
There's a huge shift in expectations put on parents to participate in athletics with their kids. We tell parents they need to be present and active with their children. And, be honest, we judge those parents who are not.
Dorito's Late Night Giveaway!
I know, I know, my last post was on clean eating. But, I love snack foods. Specifically chips. Ok, more specifically, Doritos. I can remember being about 10 years old at our summer cottage, hanging out at movie night with my closest friend, plowing through a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos. Ah, those were the days- when chips didn't equal enormous hips:)
I was recently sent (from Heaven, I assume) the most exciting product I've gotten to review- Two NEW flavours of Doritos- All Nighter Cheeseburger and Last Call Jalapeno Poppers. Luckily, I wasn't alone when the Doritos arrived & my good friend was more then helpful in "product testing":
So, our verdict? Two Words: YUM! YUM! The All Nighter Cheeseburger Doritos were unbelievable, by far my favourite. They tasted like a cheeseburger- seriously, pickles, mustard, cheese, burger meat...it's all there and it's incredible. As a completely non-partying, go-to-bed-early girl, it made even me want to party until 2am and come home starving and ready to rip into this deliciousness!
The Swag:
Now for the best part- a giveaway!!! I couldn't possibly dangle all this Dorito goodness in front of you without letting one of you in on the enjoyment, could I?
One lucky Sleeping Is For Losers reader will be the recipient of an amazing Doritos Late Night Concert Survival Kit containing:
Doritos Late Night Flavours (a bag of each flavour)
Doritos Late Night t-shirts
Ear phones
ITunes gift certificates
Concert swag such as glow sticks, sharpies, autograph pads, disposable cameras
Aquafina Vitamin Water
AMP Energy Drinks

Majesta Moms and Earth Day
How "Green" are you? Is buying environmentally sustainable products important to you or a passing thought as you swoop down the aisles looking for the best bargain and praying your toddler won't scream? Does a company's commitment to the Earth make a difference in your desire to support their products?
For the past few months, I have had the pleasure of being part of "Majesta Moms"- a group of mothers who are learning about Majesta, a Canadian company no less, their products, and their commitment to being Environmentally Responsible and Sustainable. I've been able to think about some interesting questions and receive educated responses in turn.
You cannot turn on the television or peruse the aisles at your local grocery store without being bombarded by "GREEN" and "ECO-FRIENDLY" products- a fact which has made me skeptical. Is it just a ploy to raise prices? What constitutes "eco-friendly" or "green"? Realistically, are these companies doing anything to really be environmentally sustainable?
Majesta has introduced us "Majesta Moms" to their products- tissues, toilet paper, and paper towel- and I can honestly say I was impressed. Although I am leery of so-called "green" products and their durability, Majesta stood up to all of Z's spills, my runny nose (perfect timing), and everyone's bathroom needs. Their products are biodegradable, making them easier on your septic tank. They make it a bit easier for me, as a busy mom, to choose products that have less impact on the world my child will live in.
In addition, and most importantly to me, Majesta has become "Treesponsible"- creating a movement to plant more trees. In fact, Majesta is planting THREE trees for every ONE used. In 2010, they hope to plant 1 Million trees.
As part of the celebration of the Treesponsible™ movement, Majesta is hosting a fantastic giveaway. This promotion gives Moms across Canada the chance to win $15,000 towards a Green Makeover for your home. The prize can go towards any ‘green’ home project, for example, landscaping, new energy efficient appliances or simply replacing those leaky faucets.
To enter, visit www.majesta.com before June 27th.
Got me thinking about what I would do if I won...bamboo floors, energy efficient stove and fridge, new washer and dryer, new landscaping...the possibilities are endless.
