Wild Night!

I think Z has a snotty nose cold.
He was really sleepy on Saturday night- we were having a dinner party and he fell asleep before anyone even got here.  Too bad- he had the cutest pj's on!!!
Anyway, he slept pretty well through the night- from 6pm until 8am.  He NEVER sleeps that much, so I viewed him with a suspicious eye...I knew something wasn't quite right.
On Sunday, Chris headed out to a Raptors game for the day, so Z and I settled down to play, eat, walk, etc...  But it was quite the picturesque day I imagined.  The child refused to nap.  All day long.  He maybe managed 1/2 hour nap while we were on a walk, but that was it.  I was in histerics, He was in histerics.  It wasn't a good scene.
I thought he might have a good sleep on Sunday night, because of the no naps and all.  But I was wrong.  He was up- all night.  ALL NIGHT!  I think I managed *maybe* an hour or two of sleep.  He probably got about 4 hours in total.  His nose got stuffier as the night wore on and his desire to sleep got less and less.  In fact, at about 2am, he was so wide awake I was considering his jumperoo, just to tire him out. I didn't, but I heavily considered it!
So, today, there is not enough coffee/Diet Coke in the world !!  Thank God for Sarah B, who brought us my favourite Starbucks blend (Christmas Blend)- I made a huge pot and plan to drink the entire thing today!  I am suprisingly not exhausted.  And Z is not shockingly exhausted.  I'm hoping he catches up on some sleep today- although I am not above throwing him in the carseat and driving around for hours if it helps him sleep.  I'll make a stop for McD's fries...then coffee...then ice cream?  It could be a fun day:)

Bootcamp Kicked Butt- Week 3

Dear Camille (also known as my Bootcamp Instructor),

Last night you kicked my butt, and my thighs, and my bis and tris.  And my abs.  You kicked everything I had.  And you laughed and smiled the whole time.  Evil:)  But amazing!,

Bootcamp was once again amazing last night.  Even thought I had a hysterical baby as I was running out the door, I was excited to get to bootcamp, and not disappointed again!  The thing that I really love about Bodysculpt Bootcamp classes is that they are different every single week.  I can't get bored because we never really do the same thing.  Which is perfect for someone like me, who has always exercised in relatively the same way and really needs something different to get my butt in gear.

This week we did a lot of partner work- which is pretty different for me.  Jump squats, front and back lunges, sit squats, dips off of our partners legs...Camille, you are really teaching me that using my own body weight (especially all this extra weight...haha) is an amazing way to work my muscles back into shape.

My favourite (and most evil) exercise was when one person had to go into a squat position against the wall while their partner did dips...using the squaters legs.  ArGGGGGG!  Killer- on both ends.  Wall squats are hard enough for me, let alone having someone doing dips off of them!  Second favourite? The ab work!  I really need ab work- more then the average person I'm sure, so the partner leg lifts that we did were an amazing workout.  I feel it today! Trust me!

So Camille, and anyone else reading, thank you for killing me last night.  I was a ball of sweaty messiness once the class was done.  Today, I hurt all over.  Everywhere.  But once again, it's that good hurt.  The one that makes you want to go for a long jog and do some good stretching afterwards.

And thanks again for kicking my butt with a smile and never letting me get away with doing less then my best!!

Put Up Your Dukes: Fighting The Flu

I have been a teacher for 7 years.  Every year, around this time, my classroom size shrinks.  NO- it's not a reflection of my teaching skills (I think...).  It's Flu Season.  It hits us every year and this year is no different...except with a twist for me.

As a new mother I am especially fearful about what the flu can mean for a child under 1 year old.  This year, with the added scare of the H1N1 virus, flu season seems even more top-of-mind.  I have had more conversations about the flu then I think I ever have!  Haven't you??

As a result, we have taken some serious precautions in our house.  With the plethora of mis-information out there (do your homework people!), the Ontario Ministry of Health has taken some amazing steps to ensure that the people of Ontario have the right information to help them make the right decisions for their families.

We here at Sleeping Is For Losers are taking all the necessary and logical precautions to ensure that the flu virus (including H1N1) doesn't enter our home this year.  Good hand washing (yes, that's why my hands are so cracked!), disinfecting common surfaces in our house on a daily basis, disinfecting the baby's toys on a weekly basis (or more if he's had some drooly friends over- Cole, I'm talking to you!), avoiding large crowds with the baby whenever possible (especially because people seem to LOVE to touch him!! GRRR).  The list could go on!  If you'd like a complete list of common sense ways to avoid the flu in your home, check HERE.

But, if you are a new mother like me, you probably worry a little more then the average bear.  Just saying...I check my son about 5 times a night while he's sleeping because he ISN'T up and disturbing my sleep...sound familiar?
The Ministry of Health in Ontario has saved me again.  Check out this link  as a way to assess whether you or your child could possibly have the flu- I've check it numerous time because that's how I am.  I run through the questions and breathe a huge sigh of relief.  New moms, heck even seasoned moms, need tools like these!

Choosing to vaccinate yourself and your children is absolutely a personal choice.  But if you choose to, and live in Ontario, you can visit HERE for vaccination clinics across Ontario.  Vaccinations are now available to all Ontarians.

I look at flu prevention like I look at baby-proofing (which we are in the throes of in my home).  Use your common sense, but arm yourself with as much GOOD information as possible.  Use your resources and seek advice from other moms...
I'm participating in the Mom Central Moms Fight the Flu blog tour.  So let me ask YOU- HOW do you put up your dukes and fight the flu at your house??????

Really? A HE?

This morning we went to the bank.  The woman, after cooing over Z, asked, "How old is she?".
"HE is 6 1/2 months old".
"Oh, really?  A He??"
"Yes"

HE was wearing a brown hoodie with red, blue and yellow dumptrucks all over it.  HE was wearing brown pants and navy blue shoes with a dog that said Woof.

I try to take it as a compliment.  It means that he's a pretty boy- which he is.  But still.  Come on!  You had to question that he was really a he?  Thanks.

I wore my uniform to Walmart.  Uniform = yoga pants and a hoodie.  But I carried my Coach purse.  Just so people know that there once was a time where I looked/dressed differently and almost never went to Walmart.

Yummy Coffee=Happy Mommy

Yesterday, Z and I went to visit his grandma and grandpa (my mom and dad) and his great-grandma.  It was the last time my parents will be in the city until after Christmas most likely, so my mom asked me what hubby and I might want for Christmas.  I mentioned a Tassimo.  They're on sale at Walmart.  She said, let's go.

So, off we went to Walmart.  With Z in tow.  Do you remember how much my child dislikes Walmart?  How I could never ever ever go in there with him because he would scream and cry and turn very red and flail?

Well, he's growing up.  He now tolerates Walmart.  Whew.  Thank God.  Because his formula is the cheapest there, and so are the Tassimos.  However, we still do an in and out of Walmart.  I know what I want, I go and get it, and we leave.  DONE!  End of story.  None of this "browsing"...pfffft!  He will accept the need to go there only to grab, pay and leave.  I accept this proposal and adhere to it perfectly.  I suppose, in the end, he is saving me a lot of money- that's a good way to look at it right?

So my mom, Z and I took a trip to buy our Tassimo plus an armload of disks to go with it.  She said to take it home now because we might not see them for Christmas.  YEAH! (about taking it now, not the xmas part).

There was a huge display of them.  My heart felt very happy- now I can have a coffee at home whenever I want it.  I can have a hot chocolate.  I can have a latte.  I can have a...you get the point?  I know I could easily have those things before the Tassimo, but it's not the same.  BT (before Tassimo) I was not making my coffee/latte/tea/hot chocolate in a $100 machine with individual disks made just for my beverage tasting pleasure.  I was not getting the enjoyment of watching coffee pour straight into my very own mug at the perfect temperature for sipping.  As you can clearly see, I need to get out more.

Rationing Eggos turns into a National Crisis...lol

THIS is the funniest blog post I've read in a while!
I think that reading comprehension needs to be improved, my friends, because I could read her sarcasm (in the article) loud and clear!  The fact that people actually thought that she was serious about rationing her eggos makes me laugh.  HA! (that's me, laughing).
She's a good sport- her blog in general is really dry and funny, just the way I like it.

And, to anyone who is worried, there are plenty of Eggos in Canada.  I checked:)

We're back...

Sleeping Is For Losers rings true once again in our house.
Now, Zach is a great night sleeper.  He normally does 12 full hours- I'll give him that.  But napping has become such a crazy chore!  He has decided that he only needs some tiny catnaps...sometimes he'll nap for an hour, sometimes 1/2 an hour, sometimes 15 minutes.  Sometimes he'll nap longer in the morning.  Sometimes he'll nap in the middle of the day (right now, in fact), sometimes the afternoon.
GAH!
So here I sit, thinking that if my little man could just make up his mind about napping I would:
  • smell better (because I'd shower more often)
  • look better (because I wouldn't just throw on whatever is lying on my floor)
  • eat better (because I would actually MAKE a meal instead of throwing food into my mouth when he's napped)
  • exercise better (because you know that if I DARE try to exercise while he's napping, he will wake up...instantly...that's just how it is!)

But, he's just not that into napping all of the sudden.  So hoodies, yoga pants, my ever-present ponytail and M&M's it is:)
Of course, he did do the coolest thing this morning.  I was lying on my side as he was playing with some toys.  I was watching Ellen, to be perfectly honest.  Well, I guess he needed my attention because he crawled over to me, grabbed my hoodie, pulled himself up to standing and took three steps toward me (while holding me, of course).  Then he fell.  But it was awesome while it lasted:)

Happy Friday!!! I'll be watching FlashPoint tonight- think of me as you go out and party;)

Bootcamp Kicked Butt- Week 2

OK, last week I told you all about my first week at Bootcamp (here).  I was really looking forward to this week because, while working out once a week is definietly not enough to get back my pre-baby body, it's a start and it makes me feel awesome.

Camille, my bootcamp instructor, did not disappoint at all!! This was the coolest, best, hardest workout I have done in a long time.  She calls it SHAM-OW...the name fits.  Oh man, does the name fit.
Essentially, we did all our bootcamp moves (squats, lunges, pushups, planks, etc...) putting clothes (similar to swiffers) under our hands and/or feet.
It actually seemed pretty easy and fun.  Well, it was fun...but definetly not easy.  Especially for this girl- one who is incredibly uncoordinated and trips over her own feet.   I'm awesome like that.

The class was an hour and I could feel my muscles burning about half way through.  That's my favourite thing- when you can feel those hamstrings burning before the class is even done- it's my measuring stick for a good workout.  My hamstrings and glutes were SCREAMING!  I've never had such a good burn not using weights.  The shams under our feet really kicked up the intensity- I'm still feeling it today (and LOVING IT!).

We had some killer music to accompany the workout- not my usual stuff, mostly techno remixes of Kanye and Fergie, but it made the workout slip by quickly.  There were a few times that I found myself singing to myself, just to keep my mind occupied, hoping to forget the awesome pain I was feeling.  I don't know about you, but I find that good music makes all the difference in my motivation.

I said it last week, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE my bootcamp class.  I honestly leave exhausted but so energized.  I just want to eat salad and drink water and go for a run (boo on the rain today- it'll keep us from going on our walk today).

If I can give you any advice, it would be to take the plunge and go workout.  I feel like it really makes me feel like a better mother/wife/person.

(Mostly) Wordless Wednesday!

Cuddling with Grandpa

Eating his first Mum-Mum...didn't like it so much!
Sitting with GG (great grandma)

Waking up Daddy

Tonight is BOOTCAMP!  Looking forward to it, although I really do need to work out more then once a week. We do daily walks, but it's not enough really.  Unfortunetly, in the past, I would just lose weight by dieting.  Easy peasy.  But I need my energy for Zach...I can't be fainting of hunger with a crawling 6 month old, so I'm trying to make better food choices and sneak in some extra exercise when I can!  Richelle (owner of Bootcamp) has some good "at home" ideas on her facebook page, so I think I'm going to follow those...Tell you all about bootcamp tomorrow!

Zach hearts Aunty Lizzy.

We had a busy, but great weekend!

My sister was here on Friday- Zach simply adores his aunty Lizzy!  It was so nice for me to get to have a real human being with me all day...you know, one that speaks to me in a language I can understand, one whose diaper I don't have to change, one who is mature enough not to blow raspberries full of sweet potato all over me (ok, that last one is a lie.  She totally would do that).

I picked up Lizzy from her house Friday morning and took her and Zach over to my Grandma's house.  GG (Great-grandma) gets her hair done every Friday morning.  So cute!  She looks so pretty after it's all set and done up.  While she was getting her hair done, we shopped at Winners- I bought Zach a tool bench with "tools" for Christmas, DON'T TELL HIM!- and grabbed some much needed nail polish at the drugstore.
Zach played at GG's house for a while, until he got sleepy.  We threw him into his carseat and headed down to Chris' work to show him off.

If you remember, Zach has been around for SIX MONTHS. Chris has been asking me to bring him into the office for at least the past 4 months.  But it's a pretty hefty drive from our house, and a lot of work.  Having Lizzy's extra hands made a huge difference.
Of course, Zach was a hit.  Do I even need to mention that?  He stared everyone down (no smiles- work is serious business) and had quite a fun time with one of Chris' co-workers necklaces...I'm sure he's still dreaming of that chunky, shiny necklace!

I finally dragged Lizzy and Zach home and we played, fed him, bathed him, and played some more.
I left Zach and Liz for about 1/2 an hour to run to the store.  In that time he mananged to throw up on her and have a massive, stinky poop.  That's my boy!! Saving it all for his aunty...who will probably never wants kids now after cleaning up all that grossness:)

It was just a really nice day.  I think it's so important for Zach to really know his aunts and uncles- they will be a huge part of his life as he grows up- so I'm glad he got to spend so much time with his Aunty Lizzy!

We Have Our Winner!!

Congrats MommyB!!  You are the proud owner of a Sarita Baby Bib:)
I have emailed you- if I don't have a response by Monday, I will choose a new winner using random.org!

Enjoy!

Bootcamp Kicked Butt- Week 1

I have complained about my mommy body on here a lot.  Or at least I have complained about it to a lot of people I know.  I was no fashion model before baby, but I looked good.  I didn't think so then, but when I look back at pictures I can see that I LOOKED GOOOOOOOOD!  Wish I could tell myself that:)

Since having Zach, I have been so busy that I just CANNOT will not find time to exercise.  I could if I wanted to .  I could eat better if I wanted to.  I just don't.  So I finally decided to do something about it.  I joined Bodysculpt Bootcamp.

I was so nervous before my first class.  I had threatened hubby to within an inch of his life if he didn't come home early from work so that I could make it.  He got the message and got home nice and early so I could change, gather my stuff, and get out of the house before Zach had his last bottle (he's easily distracted if someone else is there).

Putting on my pre-pregnacy yoga pants/top was a joy in and of itself.  They don't look quite as good as they used to:) Go figure.  But I did it- and arrived a my bootcamp with butterflies in my tummy and really heavy weights in my backpack.  But am I ever glad I went.

This was such a good class- one of the best I have ever been to, and I've been to quite a few in my day.  I was expecting screaming, DROP AND GIVE ME 20 MORE, humiliation, tears...maybe vomit?  Instead, the instructor was AMAZING.  She kept us moving the whole time but was adamant that we do as much as we can at the pace we could.  She walked around checking for form, gave us tips on how to make an exercise more effective....especially DIPS! I still feel them today.  But best of all, I didn't feel out of place.  Which is what I was afraid of.

But I don't want to give the wrong impression- she kicked my flabby butt!  I was a sweaty mess by the end of the class but instead of feeling sick and fat, I felt really motivated and energized.  I loved the squats, lunges, dips, curls, pushups...I loved it all.   Finally I was doing something that would really benefit me, and I think Zach, in the long run.  I found myself excited for the next class and wishing I didn't have to wait another week:)

I'm sore though.  OUCH! That's what I get for not working out since the day I found out I was preggo.  But, in all seriousness, I think I've found my new passion- bootcamp.  This particular class is phenominal and, from what the other girls told me, no two classes are ever the same...so I can't WAIT to see what she has in store for me next week.  This flabby butt will definitely need another kick by then:)

If you live in the area and have the desire to work out but need that motivation, you need to check out Bodysculpt Bootcamp.

Sarita Baby Bib Review and GIVEAWAY!

Sarita Baby is a very cool shop that I came across while I was still pregnant with Zach.  She carries a wide variety of accessories for your baby (think bibs, stuffed animals, pacifier clips, etc...) in the funkiest colours and patterns.  I was in love from the moment I laid eyes on her merchanise...and you will be too!!

The owner of Sarita Baby was kind enough to give me a bib for Zachary to use at home and not a moment too soon.  My child likes to eat.  He also likes to put his hands in his food, drop food out of his mouth, smear hands all over his very nice clothes, etc... Our big problems with bibs have been that:
1) he can rip the bib off with one strong tug
2) the velcro on the bib hurts his neck and leaves a big red mark OR
3) the bib isn't big enough to cover his nice clothes!

Sarita Baby's bibs have solved these problems for me.  The backside of the bib is lined in a soft minky material that eliminates any potential scratching or irritation of skin (also, Zach loved to rub this part of the bib- it was so soft!). The velcro is heavy duty...so far my hoodini hasn't figured out how to rip it off.  Finally, it is a nice, wide bib!  It covers his chest and so far we haven't had any sweet potato stained clothes while wearing the bib.

My favourite part of the bibs she carries is the pattern!  They are so funky- Zach has guitars, but there are so many great ones to choose from.  All I can say is that we here at Sleeping Is For Losers are fans!!!

And you, my friends, are lucky!  One lucky Sleeping Is For Losers reader will WIN a Sarita Baby bib!
The bibs measure approx 8" x 12" which is great for covering the chest and belly.  It is backed with a supersoft minky material that is nice and soft against little ones necks.  The closure is velcro.  Suitable for Newborn to Toddler.  Best of all, it is machine washable and tumble dry.  We are giving away a Mod Apples Baby Bib.  Perfect for a boy or girl!

GOOD LUCK!

I forgot to mention...

Prunes work.  Amazingly.

So does apple sauce.

My son, however, can still not eat peas or green beans without being up all night long with heart-wrenching, sobbing cries.  He will turn a nice shade of orange soon- I'm sure of it!

A story of real love

I cried when I read this story.
This, to me, is true love and real family. Makes me want to squeeze my little man a little tighter and remind him a few more times how much I love and adore him.

Eggnog Latte Coma and Banana Muffins to Die For!

Good afternoon my friends,

Well, as my baby has nap #2 of the day, I am sitting in the haze of an eggnog latte coma and my tummy is full of the best banana muffins ever!
Eggnog latte- I cannot take credit for.  It's a Starbucks masterpiece and I love it with every fibre of my being...lol!  I think I like it more then the Pumpkin Spice latte, which I really do love.  The Carmel Brulee is next on my list.  I do believe that from October - Decemeber I could single handedly keep my Starbucks going.  I drink way too many of their delicious specialty drinks during those months.

However, the real reason for my post today is to share with you all the greatest banana muffin recipe.  I had some almost ready to be thrown out bananas sitting on my counter.  I find they don't freeze well for baby food and, even though Zachary loves them a lot, he really only has half of one two times a week.  I detest throwing out food so, I put on my Suzie Homemaker hat and decided to make muffins during his afternoon nap.  I don't really know what possessed me to do it, but I did.

I have an old recipe for banana muffins that I have tweaked over the years.  I don't know where the original one came from, but I think I have finally figured out the key to great muffins- a little less sugar and FOUR bananas.  They turn out incredibly moist with that extra banana and, as I already find bananas pretty sweet when baked, they don't need that much sugar.

I count banana muffins as a fruit serving, so eat up!!!

Best Banana Muffins EVER!
4 Large very ripe Bananas, mashed (leave them a bit chunky)
1/2 cup white sugar
1 slightly beaten egg
1/3 cup melted butter
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt (if you used salted butter, cut this down a bit)
1 1/2 cups flour

Mix the mashed banana, sugar, egg and butter together.  Add baking soda, baking powder, salt and flour.  Mix together, being careful not to overstir!
Pour into greased muffin tins, back at 350 degrees for approximately 20 minutes (mine were ready after 17 minutes though, so keep an eye on them).

I'm going to let you in on my little secret...for a really yummy and tasty suprise, drop a mini reese peanut butter cup or a dollop of peanut butter into the centre of each muffin before baking.  It makes them even more amazing!  And peanut butter is a protein...so fruit, carbs and protein all in one muffin;)  See how my mind works???

Happy Friday...we have a new giveaway coming up next week, so stay tuned:)

What's a mom to do?

Today is the LAST DAY to enter the Diaper/Wipe Giveaway!! Don't forget:)

Well, we went for Zach's 6 month check-up on Monday. He got his needles and was SUCH a brave boy! I was so proud of him- he barely cried at all and was playing around and smiling within 5 minutes. He's getting so big.

When he was weighed, he was only 16 pounds. I thought that was interesting, because I assumed he would weigh more then that. The doctor wants him to gain more weight because he has dropped below the 50th percentile. Mind you, he was weighed early in the morning- all of his other appointments have been in the afternoon after he's eaten a lot more! Once again, he was in the 90th percentile for height!

Here's the thing- he has always hovered right around the 50th percentile of weight. I HATE IT! I want him to get thicker and have more rolls. But what am I supposed to do? He eats like a truck driver. Zachary averages 30 oz of formula a day (some days less, some days more), 4 tbsp of cereal in the morning with 4-6 tbsp of fruit, and 2 tbsp of cereal in the evening with 4-6 tbsp of veggies (and this has started to climb). It seems to me that he is ALWAYS eating, yet he never seems to gain much weight. Just about a pound a month.

So, I once again left his doctor's appointment with anxiety that I'm not feeding him enough, or his body isn't absorbing nutrients properly, or I'm creating a child who will never want to eat because I'm sticking too much food into him or not sticking enough...sigh...add constipation to the mix (due to all the stinking food he's eating!!!), and it's just about enough to make me lose my mind.

The only thing that has given me peace is that my child is Active with a capital "A". He probably burns off calories faster then he can take them in. He is never still. Even when he sleeps. He is always moving!!

So, I'm going to spend the next few months making sure that Zachary eats as much as he wants. The doctor doesn't want to see us again until he is 9 months, I am sure if she was worried about his weight she'd want to see us much sooner. In the meantime, I'll just keep copying my "mommy guru", A, and feeding my son as much as he will take.

They all even out in the end, right?? RIGHT???

PS- we had prunes for breakfast to help out with the "constipation". He's been grunting and crying for the past few days, so I'm hoping these help him out a bit!

Happy 6 Month Birthday Baby Boy!

Six months ago today, a screaming, red-haired, scrunchy faced baby boy came into my world and changed it forever.

I never thought I would be so happy, feel so much love, be so tired, consume so much caffine, eat take-out even when I am perfectly able to cook, love a very noisy jumperoo, pray for naps, pray for more play time, be so excited over poopy diapers, not mind cleaning up said poopy diapers, cry and laugh at the same time so often.

I never thought that the gift of a baby boy would mean more to me then anything else in this world. That the world as I knew it would cease to exist and that I would love the new one I was thrust into. I didn't realize that having Zachary would make me want to change so much. I would become "that mom"- the one who only wears ponytails, thinks jeans make her look more fancy, has throw-up somewhere on her body at all times, watches the news just for grown-up contact, and adores staying home with her child every single day- but I'm so glad that I am!

You have learned so much in six short months, little boy. You smile, laugh, roll both ways, move objects between your hands, throw things, sit up all on your own,put your arms out for mommy, try to talk, and have just started to crawl. You love to listen to the music in church, know exactly how to get your own way, throw the cutest fits, and love to eat solids! You amaze me at every turn, Zachary.

I cannot wait to see what the next 6 months will bring- how you will grow and learn and develop. But always know that you are the light of my life, I love you through and through, to the moon and back, and always and forever my baby you will be!

xo

My Monkey!

Last night, Zach dressed up as a monkey. He was so stinking cute- I think he liked the costume a lot!!! He kept rubbing his fuzzy belly. He also thought the monkey hat made a really good chew toy:) He's so stinking cute! I love that we had a good reason to dress our almost 6 month old up in a ridiculous monkey costume!
We only had about 50 kids at our house. We had double or triple that last year! I think all this H1N1 stuff was scaring some of them off...plus, it was really really windy out.
Chris got to carve his first ever pumpkin. It was a puking pumpkin (classy!), and we had kids and their parents lining up to get their picture taken with it! HA! He did a really good job of it- and I think he secretly had a lot of fun;)

Here's some pics of our night:
