Schedule?

What schedule?? Up until 2 weeks ago, my little man was rocking the schedule thing! He woke up at 7am, ate every 4 hours (almost on the dot!), slept every 2 or so hours after waking up. I could plan things, I could attend things, I was very confident in my mommy abilities.

THEN, at 5 1/2 months, he changed. Total turn-around. Started waking up anytime between 7:30am-8:00am...that wasn't a problem. But then he changed when he ate, how much he ate, when he napped, how much he napped...

Now I am scared to make plans! I never know when he's going to want to eat, nap, play, cry. I can have him 100% ready for an outing, only to have him decide to take a 2 hour nap. I can have nothing planned and he naps for 45 minutes the whole day. Hair pulling has ensued! Chris calling is more frequent! Bags under eyes have grown more noticeable! But mostly, I miss all of our activities:( I loved going out and seeing other moms and babies! I loved having adult conversations!! I loved our frequent "play dates" with his best friend Cole! (ok, they don't play together, but it was nice to see another mom so often).

I know babies don't come with an instruction manual and you can't make them stay on a schedule, but wouldn't it be nice?? Oh the joy it would bring...

PS- don't forget to sign up for the giveaway!! Only a few more days left...all you need to do is leave a comment:)

My day...

Good evening:
This is night #4 of being alone with Zach, all day, every day! Bah! I'm tired...

Here are some of the highlights of today:

-Completely different nap/feeding schedule then we have been doing for the past 2 months. Apparently my baby doesn't need to sleep, ever, haha.

-Covered in a shower of sweet potato, thanks to the fact that my son has learned how to blow really really good raspberries and wants to show it off, all the time.

-Covered in carrot-laden throw-up, thanks to the bib that my son tried to jam into his mouth, causing him to gag and release the 4 tablespoons of carrots and 2 tablespoons of oat cereal he had just eaten.

-Wearing carrot-laden throw-up on my shirt and jeans for 2 hours. I had to clean him up and re-feed him because he was hungry...I've worn worse.

-Pacifier up my nose. Who knew it would fit?? Zach did!

-EIGHT pacifiers on the floor during ONE attempt at a nap. He's got a good arm- one made it clear across the room!

-Baby spit all over my ear. Apparently it tastes good?

- Attempting to crawl...over and over and over and over and over...all while he is "supposed" to be sleeping. Uh-huh.

- The cutest smiles, giggles, and conversations ever!!! He totally makes it all worth it!

Wordless Wednesdays

Zach is feeling a bit out of sorts today, so we've just stayed home, slept and played! Meanwhile, I have done absolutely no cleaning and have eaten too much Halloween candy...anyway, some beautiful pics of my darling boy care of Sarah Ball Photography.

Check me out!!!!!!!

It's been a while since I've done any "published" writing, but I thought I might jump back into it...my hope is that I will be able to do some writing on the side once my mat leave is up (in 6 months!!! AHHH!)- great extra income and something I love to do!

Anyway, check out an editorial I wrote for urbanmoms.ca:

Baby Food

Zachary has started eating pureed baby food. Not jarred. Homemade Pureed Baby Food. I have tried countless jars and different types but, nope, my baby only wants his mommy's food. Trust me, I'm happy to have him eating food that is fresh and homemade, but I had never been the type of mother who had to make her child's food. In fact, I would have been more then happy to have him eat organic jarred baby food. But nope- he's not having it! If it's not made by me, it's not being eaten.

So now, my evenings are full of steaming and pureeing and freezing ice cubes trays of baby food for my darling boy. And, man, does he ever like to eat it! He devours his food with gusto. It usually ends up all over his face and hands, but I don't mind. Sometimes he won't even look up at me, he's so intent on eating that food! Unfortunately, I often have to cut him off because he just can't stop. He wants more cereal, more pears, more carrots, sweet potato, and just about anything else that comes his way. As a compromise, I let him lick his bowl clean after we're done eating.

Although I had always wanted to give Zach organic food, I find the organic fruit and veggie selection here in Whitby leaves a lot to be desired. It is often the least fresh looking of all the produce at the store, so, as a compromise, I am simply choosing as many seasonal, fresh veggies and fruit as I can find. If it looks good, then I buy it. If it's grown locally, even better. Last week I picked up fresh squash, carrots and apples from the farm down the street to turn into baby food. During the winter, when local farms don't have their produce for sale, I'll be only choosing food that looks good.

I love feeding this little boy, though, and I'm so happy that he enjoys his food as much as he does. It's so fun to have all these new experiences with Zachary and see him growing and developing so quickly. That being said, why can't he eat jarred baby food...just once????

10 Commandments and Dead Sea Scrolls

Today, Zachary, Chris, my sister Elizabeth (or Aunty Lizzy, as she is more commonly called), and I all went to the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) to see the final day of the 10 Commandments exhibit and the Dead Sea Scrolls. We got there at 10am (after discovering that Yonge St. was closed down for a race..grrrrrr!) and headed off to the Dead Sea Scrolls and the 10 Commandments. The line-ups were HUGE, but it was an amazing experience to get to stand in the presence of God's word, written so long ago, that has stood the test of time.

Both the 10 Commandments and Dead Sea Scrolls were literally ripped pieces of parchment with Hebrew writing on them, but their history and their meaning came through, loud and clear!! As a Christian, their significance in my life, and in history, is awe-inspiring.

Chris carried Zachary in the front carrier. He used to HATE it and scream and kick and yell when I put him in it, but he suddenly has grown fond of it. I think it's because he is at eye-level with all those big people that usually stand over top of him! Plus, he had Aunty Lizzy to keep him occupied..she's his favourite girl! Unfortunetly, I forgot to get a picture of Zach and Chris...bah! It really was cute! However, I got a ton of pictures of Zachary in his stroller, which he was also an angel in, after we had our lunch. He missed the entire dinosaur exhibit, but I doubt he minded:) He needed his little cat-nap!

In all, Zachary lasted about 4 hours at the ROM with almost no fussing. He got one full feeding, a cat nap while we looked at the dinosaurs, a throw-up on daddy because he was bouncing him around (that's my boy), and a whole lot of culture. It made me realize how much my baby boy has grown up. It was only a few months ago that I tried to take him to IKEA and he screamed and yelled and fussed the entire time. He's come a long way!

And when we pulled into our driveway, after a long day out, here's what we found...my favourite kind of baby:)

Fall Photoshoot!

Today, Zachary, Chris and I braved the chillier temps and got some fall family photos taken. We have only ever done a photoshoot for Zachary before and, while I think Chris was less then thrilled, I really wanted to get some good shots of us and our little boy - he's only getting bigger by the minute! So off we went to a nearby conservation area, in search of some colourful leaves and some big smiles from our little boy!

Now that Zachary can sit on his own (when he feels like it...lol), it's a lot more fun to take him places. He loved sitting in the grass and pulling on it, playing with the pumpkins and gourds (and putting them in his mouth...ewwwwww), and he didn't even seem to mind sitting on the edge of an old bridge. And if you know anything about Zachary, it's that he LOVES the camera! Ever since he was born he has adored getting his picture taken. I'm not sure why, but I'm happy to oblige him- he's so photogenic and good tempered, even though he missed out on a nap and had cold little hands!

I don't want to put up too many photos right now, but here are two of the amazing shots we got! I was suprised at how good Zach was the entire shoot. It was a bit chilly outside and, let's be honest, what kid loves being carted around and made to sit on the ground and hold gourds? But he was great, had a lot of fun, and really loved the photographer, Sarah:) It helps that she's good with kids (and that Chris and I were making darn fools of ourselves to make him laugh!). Sarah really is a great photographer- one that I would highly recommend to anyone thinking about getting photos done in Toronto/Durham Region!

You'll see many more of these pics during Wordless Wednesdays, or when I have nothing else to say..lol! I am just loving looking at them!

Snowsuit in October!

Well, I pulled out the snowsuit! IT'S OCTOBER PEOPLE!!! I DIDN'T THINK I WOULD NEED THIS FOR AT LEAST ANOTHER MONTH! But, it was 1 degree when we were leaving the house to go swimming and I wasn't sure what to do. It definitely isn't hoodie and some sweatpants weather anymore. So, I mustered my courage and pulled out my little boy's snowsuit that he got from his Grandma. It's light blue with a really soft, plush lining and built in booties and mitts. I thought he was going to HATE me for putting that thing on him, but not so much. He didn't like when I pulled his arms through, but other then that I think he found it very cosy and warm on his little body.

Getting him into the car seat was another challenge. I think we're about done with the removable car seat- he's too heavy for me to carry him in it and the straps are almost at their capacity, so I guess we'll be buying a big boy car seat for him pretty soon...sigh! We did it though, and still managed to make it to swimming right on time.

On the way home, he fell asleep, so I snapped a quick picture for you all to see how cute he looks in his snowsuit. He's always so zonked after swimming (and after STILL NOT SLEEPING AT NIGHT...but that's another story!).

Mommy groups and Nanny

Today Zach and I were at our Mom group. I never thought I would join a mom group. Well, I did...and I really, really like it! The girls there are super nice and we've been meeting since the middle of August, so we've really gotten to know each other and see our babies learn new skills and develop their own little personalities. I think one of the babies today taught Zach to squeal when he's trying to "talk". He squealed at me for at least an hour this evening when we were playing in my room. Little goof!

I really love that we have started meeting at each other's houses. We used to meet in the basement of a church with only a few old couches and a questionable rug there. Now, we get to let our little ones discover new toys, roll over eachother, and share drool. It's fun to be able to sit on the floor with Zach and the other babies and watch them playing. I can't wait until they interact and actually notice eachother..lol! Zach took a header as he was reaching for a toy. He is great at sitting, but he hates doing it. I have to make sure he is really focused on the toy he is playing with, otherwise he ends up belly flopping or banging his head off the floor. I truely believe that God made babies with extra strength skulls. At least 4 of them banged their head this morning!

We rushed home from baby group because Zach's Nanny (Chris' mom) was coming over. She is wonderful and let's me go grocery shopping or run my errands baby-free. It's amazing how much more you get done when you don't have a baby screaming at you!

I told someone that I had to leave because Zach's Nanny was coming over. They went into a huge speel about how much they wish they could have a nanny, and asked if I was interested in splitting the cost of my nanny with her, etc... I hated to break the news to her that it was indeed my husband's mother who we call "Nanny", and that she came free but only for Zachary. I could read the disappointment in her eyes;)

Wordless Wednesdays

Impromptu photo shoot in my bedroom last week. He's getting way too big for my liking...he had just woken up from a nap, so excuse the dazed look in some pics:)

Me and my baby

Ohhhh, a camera

Seriously, stop taking my picture

OK, well, I am cute, so just a few more

Look at me sitting all by myself!

No Sleep Nights!

I am writing much earlier then I usually do- because my baby boy kept me up pretty much the whole night.

He started fussing in his sleep at about 8:30pm. He'd been asleep for about an hour. He had eaten a lot during the day (including two baby cubes of homemade sweet potato and 3 tablespoons of oat cereal) and went to sleep pretty easily. I thought he would be tired out from all of the festivities of the Thanksgiving weekend and would sleep like a dream...boy was I wrong.

Starting from 8:30pm, Zach was up every single hour. He didn't miss one! He wasn't awake, but he was crying in his sleep. I went down the list of possibilities:

1) Hungry?? Nope! I tried to feed him, he didn't eat.
2) Wet/Poopy Diaper?? Nope! I did change his diaper- made no difference.
3) Gas? No burps, no toots...no gas!
4) Hurt in some way? Couldn't find ANYTHING that may have been hurting him or bothering him.

The only thing I am left with is that he is teething...but this is the second night in a row that he has been up (although the night before wasn't nearly as bad). I don't know how much more I can do on so little sleep.

When he "woke up" for the day at 7am (like always) I begrudgingly shuffled to his room. I was annoyed and wished I could have just one extra hour of sleep. Then he saw me...and he started kicking and smiling and laughing...how could I be mad at a face like that, huh?? I'll take no sleep just to see my baby boy smiling his gummy at me from his crib. It melts my heart every time.

Although I have a feeling that coffee will be my friend today- my very best friend:)

Happy Thanksgiving!

It's Thanksgiving here in Canada. We are very lucky and get TWO Thanksgiving Turkey Dinners.
YEAH!
So, Zach and I will probably be out of commission until Tuesday unless I can get a minute to post. In the meantime, we (meaning me) will be enjoying not cooking and eating WAY too many calories:) Love this time of year!

good day!

We went swimming this morning and it was lovely. They had them wear life vests. It squished up Zach's cheeks and he was none too happy...but he didn't cry or fuss- just absolutely NO SMILES! Once we took the vests off and started playing with yellow rubber duckies in the kiddie pool, all was forgiven. He was very serious about grabbing the yellow ducky off the side of the pool.

Now he has totally zonked right out- he fell asleep while finishing his bottle at 11:30am, and I haven't heard a peep since. I'm sure he will now wake up because I wrote that. Never brag about your child and their sleeping habits. Why haven't I learned that yet???

New Day, New Skills...

Well, this morning my beautiful friend Gloria came over to hang out with Zach and I. She has been in Shanghai designing her fashion/handbag line for the past 6 weeks and is going back on Monday for another 2 months. I miss her a ton when she's gone. And Zachary just ADORED her. All he did was stare at her and smile- he also tried to chat with her for a few minutes...wonder what he wanted to say?

Anyway, today Zachary has learned (and will now work tirelessly on mastering) two new skills:

1) Throwing his pacifier against the wall when he wants me to come and pick him out of the crib. This is currently his favourite thing to do. He barely cries when he wakes up (only when he goes to sleep...lol), but he doesn't think I make it into his room fast enough, so he throws his paci against the wall in hopes that I will be in the next room and hear it. I find it quite cute, but I'm sure that I'll be irritated by it soon enough!

2) Crawling. He is about 90% up on his hands and knees and crawling backwards. He is only 5 months old. He is not supposed to be doing this. He's actually getting quite good at going backwards, although it does make him mad because it takes him further away from the toy that he is trying to reach. It also exhausts him so he can only do it for a few minutes before getting quite cranky.
Zach has been working on crawling for quite a few days but this morning he got all the way up in his hands and knees and crawled a few steps backwards. He also sat on his own for about 10 minutes this morning before he got irritated with his toy, flung it across the room, and flopped over.
I'm hoping and praying that this morning was a fluke and he is not going to be crawling so soon...where has my little baby gone????

PS- he was up EVERY HOUR last night. I was sure I felt a sharp little tooth poking out of the top of him gums, but this morning it wasn't there...disappearing tooth???

Blogger eats my posts!

I have written 3 posts today and Blogger has eaten them all:(

Sorry to have been such a slacker. Zach is feeling a ton better, got most of his energy back, and has decided he would now like to crawl. He is 5 months old. I told him he, in no way, needs to crawl yet. He laughed at me and kept working on it...hmmmmmm.

I have been feeling so energetic lately- all I want to do is clean and play and clean and play...I keep waiting for the inevitable crash. That crash, of course, will be accompanied by Zachary not wanting to nap, I'm sure of it! It's just the way it goes.

Storytime tomorrow- I think Zach is really looking forward to being out of the house and seeing people that aren't me. We only have 2 more weeks of storytime left- not sure what we'll sign up for next. Hopefully something equally as fun and free!

As a nice ending to my day, I picked up the mail and recieved a free book from Random House. I have no idea why I got it, I must have won some type of contest, but I'll take pretty much anything that is free, so yeah me!! It's called "The Girls" by Lori Lansens...it has great reviews on Amazon, so I'm hoping it will be a page turner. The last two books I tried to read ("The American Wife" and "Pillars of the Earth") were sooooooo not my type of book and I really couldn't get through them. Hopefully this book will tide me over until another book on my list becomes available through the library...but I'll let you know!

Crossing my fingers that this post sticks.......

Friends

I'm really really proud of my girl friends. I've had lots of "friendships" over the years, but there are girls in my life now that I'm so very, very proud of because they are living their lives the way they want to, exploring new avenues, and not being afraid to take risks. We're all approaching, or in, our 30's, and it feels like life is really just beginning for us all.

Let me just give you a little sneak peek (and this is not an exhaustive list by any means!!!):

E is taking the LSAT after being a teacher for years. She will do amazingly, I know it!
S is going to college after years of talking about it!! I can't wait for the free facials girlie:)
G left her job and CANADA to pursue her clothing line, which is beyond beautiful and amazing.
A is my "mommy guru", the funniest person I know, and (while a pretty new friend, considering) a real inspiration
N is getting marrrrieeeed to a really amazing guy who actually deserves her. Plus, she's a kick-butt, hot model!
AM bought a house and has a new teaching position which she 100% deserves!
LP lives my journalism dream every day. She is such an amazing writer and I am so proud of ALL her accomplishments in life!

Not to mention all the amazing new mommy friends I've met since having Zach, or all the other friends in my life who just inspire me with the way they live their lives from day to day.
I really believe that God brings the right people into your life at the right time, and I am so thankful that God chose to bring all of you into my life to inspire me the way you do!!!

Happy 5 Month Birthday Zachary!!!!

My beautiful baby boy turns 5 months old today. It made me think of all the things I would want to tell myself five months ago, when I had just had Zachary:

1) Don't be afraid of him- he will scream, cry, throw up all over you, poop and not poop, get a cold, but he will be ok...and so will you! Zachary will have more personality then you know what to do with, but once he gets past 2 months old, he will be the most fun, adorable, bundle of joy you have ever met!

2) Books will not help you- Zachary will absolutely march to the beat of his own drum and you will just have to try to figure out the tune and follow along. No amount of shussssshing, crying it out, or swaddling will change that. You'll learn to love it:)

3) You will change- and you will LOVE it!! Some days you will not shower and not wear makeup and you will live in hoodies and still be 10 pounds heavier then you have ever been...and you will still LOVE it! Zach will be your world and you will fit in things around his schedule, not the other way around. You won't be sad if you don't go out to dinner, don't watch your favourite tv shows, and that you don't fit into your very very expensive jeans anymore. You will just be so happy that you have the most amazing baby in the world!

4) Don't let ANYONE make you feel bad- you are Zach's mother and you know best. People will give you all the advice in the world, but you will still know best. Stand your ground.

5) You will love like you have never loved before- You love your husband, you love your family, you love your friends, but you L-O-V-E your baby. It is the most amazing love you have ever felt. It makes you wonder what life was all about before you had your beautiful baby...and why you waited so long to have him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
